Instrument Rating

Getting your instrument pilot rating gets you one step closer to becoming a Professional Pilot. The Instrument Rating (IR) is a qualification that is added to your Commercial Pilot License (CPL) or Private Pilot License (PPL) that allows you to fly by reference to your flight instruments in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) which are weather conditions below the Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC).

Instrument Rating Requirements:

  • At least 50 hours of cross-country flight as the pilot-in-command & at least 10 hours must have been in an airplane.
  • 40 hours of instrument time either actual or simulated of which:
    • 15 hours must have been received from an authorized instructor who holds an instrument-airplane rating.
    • 3 hours of instrument flight training from an authorized CFI in an airplane that is appropriate to the instrument-airplane rating within 2 calendar months before the date of the practical test
    • Instrument flight training on cross country flight procedures, in an airplane with a CFI under Instrument Rules filing a Flight Plan with an ATC that involves:

(A) A flight of 250 nautical miles along airways or by directed routing from an air traffic control facility;

(B) An instrument approach at each airport; and

(C) Three different kinds of approaches with the use of navigation systems.
